Abstract

This work focuses on the study of the processes taking place during the carbonation of ladle furnace slag (LFS). The main phases present in LFS, namely γ-C2S, β-C2S, C4AF, C12A7, and in addition α′-C2S, were first synthesized in a pure form. Afterwards, the carbonation activity was studied for all samples, including the LFS itself. The highest carbonation activity was observed for the γ-C2S phase, followed by α′-C2S and LFS. In the course of carbonation of LFS, mainly carbonates resp. CaCO3 in various modifications were formed, but also smaller amounts of hydration products were formed, especially in the case of the aluminate phases during a very fast reaction with the added water.
