In today’s era the importance of infrastructure maintenance continues to grow as the population of humanity and urbanization grows. The need of maintaining infrastructure from pavement and concrete continues to be a relevant topic. This study serves to investigate machine learning approaches from a variety of architectures that can assist with the detection of cracks in concrete and pavement. In this study the four proposed models (CNN with a Prewitt Operator for edge detection, CNNViT, CNNSVM, and R-CNN) provide insight on what approach works to detect cracking effectively, and what factors can affect the detection of cracking. These models are trained on three datasets, consisting of images of concrete, pavement, and both concrete and pavement, and are classified into positive and negative. A series of experiments, such as changing the optimizer from Adam to NAG and to Nadam, and data sample size from 6000, 8000, and 12000, were performed. For the CNNSVM model the kernel was changed from linear to RBF, and to Poly, as was the C value from 1 and 4. The base CNN model achieved accuracy of 97.83%, 85.61%, and 95.11%, CNNViT achieved 98.17%, 84.61%, and 95.81% accu racy, CNNSVM model was least accurate, while R-CNN model achieved 95.02%, 87.22%, and 91.16% accuracy for the three datasets, respectively. The proposed models achieved satisfactory results for crack detection in pavement and concrete. Being able to detect cracks automatically and effectively contributes to more cost-effective solutions by utilizing machine learning techniques.
