The article focuses on the possibilities of modifying the window assemblies of apartment buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The issue is illustrated through a case study of a building constructed in 1873, located in Prague in the heart of Žižkov and protected as a cultural monument. It examines in detail the restoration, renovation, and maintenance of historical window assemblies, addressing the methods of their repair as well as current technical and material possibilities for their renewal. The study concentrates on options for improving the technical performance of existing window structures, their comparison, and their adaptation to present-day standards required of new constructions. The issue is approached not only from a technical and financial perspective but also in terms of thermal performance and moisture balance in the assessed windows.
